There’s nothing to worry about! Getting to our property from the closest airports is easy and convenient! We’ll break down the several ways you get around the Tulum area.
What are the options?
Staying at Casa Colibri gives a broader perspective of Tulum, where you’ll see the jungle around the town. Here are some of our recommendations:
- Rent a Car
We recommend renting a car to be able to sightsee and do many activities in one day. There is so much to see in Tulum, and a car makes it easy to move around quickly. If you don’t want to deal with the hassle of picking up the car at the airport, we can arrange a private shuttle for you. We can also provide car rental service with drop off and pick up on our property.
- Taking Taxis
Taxis are an easy way of getting from one place to another in Tulum. There are several cab pick up stations around downtown and the hotel zone. This makes it easy to travel from the hotel zone to a cenote or ruins nearby.
It’s important you know that Tulum can be pricey and that includes taxi fares as well. A cab drive from our property to downtown has a cost of 550 MXN for a one way service. To the hotel zone, it’s about 1000 MXN. This means you will need to plan your day trips according to the places you want to visit.
If you would like to do many day trips during your stay with us, we recommend other transportation options.
Do transportation apps work in Tulum?
Unfortunately, there aren’t any major rideshare companies in Tulum or the nearby area.
- Renting a Scooter
Another way to get around Tulum is one that many travelers choose; renting a scooter. Renting a scooter will save you a little bit of money, but take into account you will be driving on the highway to get to our property.
You’re going to see risky tourists driving ATV’s on the highway. We don’t recommend this, ATV’s aren’t allowed on the highway, and you may get stopped by traffic police.
If you don’t feel too confident with driving a scooter on the highway, then a rental car is the best option for you!
- Public Transportation
For the adventurous tourist that wants to explore by foot, public transportation is the way!
From Cancun and Tulum airports you can take the ADO bus to downtown Tulum, which has a cost of approximately 400 pesos per person. In downtown Tulum, a couple of blocks down from the bus station, is the “Colectivo” stop, which are vans that drive up and down the highway to Playa del Carmen. To our stop, Tankah 3, is about a 15 minute drive and costs approximately 35 pesos. It’s wise to carry the correct change while traveling in the colectivos.
Downtown is really nice for strolling. There are plenty of murals from local and international artists as well as great coffee shops. We recommend walking around Tulum. There is a great community of locals, from all over the world, creating and developing projects in the area. It’s worth getting to know the people that make Tulum so fun!
If you want to visit the Jaguar Park (Tulum ruins are located in this park), we recommend going early, around 9 am. If it’s the weekend, go even earlier as parking can be hectic. The way we recommend to visit the park is to rent a bicycle at the Tulum ruins and head on to Ikal Beach club. There are plenty of places to secure your bicycle and you can avoid parking fees. There is a public beach access there.
We are lucky to have such special national parks and archaeological ruins sites close by. Chichen Itzá is about 3 hours away and Sian Ka’an is about 1 hour and a half away from our property. Most cenotes, beaches, eco parks and the Tulum ruins are a 30-minute driving distance. If you don’t feel like doing the driving, tours are a great way of seeing the area. Personally, Mexico Kan Tours offer the widest range of tours that are actually single-use plastic free! The less impact we have on these special areas, the better!
