Our waters are home to a vast variety of marine animals, from sneaky octopus and colossal whale sharks to many different species of alluring sharks. Getting to know the Mexican Caribbean dive sites with their beautiful marine species is something you can’t miss when visiting Tulum. This area is particularly rich in shark diversity.

How does a Shark dive look like with The Dive Machine? It starts with the sunrise and Alejandra, Mau or Adrian arriving at your accommodation in their groovy van. One of them will be your dive master for the day! The crew knows just how to set a splendid pre-dive vibe! This dive takes place in Playa del Carmen, a 40-minute drive from our property. They offer you a pre-dive breakfast so you have enough energy while diving. (Casa Colibrí has a breakfast to go option, so you can be fully stocked on during your dive! Once at the dive shop, they will give you specific instructions and a step-by-step explanation of the dive. You get your equipment and set off towards the beach. It’s about a 10-minute boat ride to the dive spot where you will see bull sharks.
The sharks you will see during this dive are female bull sharks that arrive at our coast during November to the end of February. These females are pregnant and like to stay close to the coast during the last months of their gestation. They choose our waters for feeding and for the cool currents. This is a deep dive, about 25 meters down, so you will need an Advanced certification. The duration is about 25 minutes and these females will be swimming around you. It’s surreal to see these big animals swim so gracefully around you. It is surreal to swim with these big graceful animals. After the shark dive, you will visit another reef of your choosing close to the shark dive spot. If you’re lucky, you might get to see another shark at the new site.
Sharks aren’t mindless monsters—they’re apex predators. Unfortunately, TV shows like Shark Week and mainstream media often spread misinformation about these misunderstood creatures. Sharks play a crucial role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems and deserve our respect for that. While they are curious, they are also cautious. During a shark dive, most of the time, sharks will keep their distance, allowing you to observe their fascinating behaviors from a safe distance.
The post-dive chill is a real vibe after a dive. Sipping your drink of choice, toes in the sand, good company by your side, and the incredible feeling of witnessing these magnificent creatures as the sun sets is magnificent.
